The Road to the 2016 Kentucky Derby continues this weekend with the Tampa Bay Derby and San Felipe Stakes. The two official prep races will welcome several top names to their respective tracks on Saturday, including Brody's Cause and Destin in Tampa and Mor Spirit, Smokey's Image and Exaggerator in Santa Anita.
And while $750,000 will be on the line between both races this weekend, ticket demand remains modest for "The Most Exciting Two Minutes" in Sports on resale outlets. The 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby will be held at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 7, and those hoping to attend the first leg of the Triple Crown can now find tickets for well under $100.
According to Razorgator.com, the cheapest 2016 Kentucky Derby tickets are situated in the Infield General Admission for $67. This time last year, when American Pharoah was making his first strides towards infamy in the Grade II Rebel Stakes, Kentucky Derby tickets could be found starting from $95 on the secondary market, marking a near 30% drop in get-in price from year-to-year.
Of course, such a price is subject to change as the event approaches. General Admission tickets are still available via Ticketmaster and start from $55 (excluding fees), but the official site of the Kentucky Derby claims that tickets are almost sold out. Once tickets do indeed sell out, the get-in price on resale outlets is likely to rise, so derby-goers are best advised to act on tickets as soon as possible.
Outside of the infield, Grandstand seating for 2016 Kentucky Derby tickets on Razorgator begins from $345 per ticket, down 18.8% from the $425 asking price this time last year. Access to Clubhouse seating will cost slightly more, starting from $496 in Clubhouse 11 and maxing at $3,784 in Clubhouse 317.Having won the 2015 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, Brody's Cause has experience in high-profile races, though will make his first race start in 19 weeks. Destin finished fourth in the Lecomte Stakes back in January and won the 2 and 1/4-length at the Tampa Bay's Sam F. Davis Stakes last month. Out in Santa Anita, Mor Spirit will face a competitive field alongside the likes of 6-for-6 California Cup Derby winner Smokey's Image and Exaggerator, who took second-place honors to Nyquist in the Grade II Vicente last month.
