Looking for the Best July 4 Celebration? Avoid These 10 Cities

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Making plans to travel for July 4 weekend? You may want to steer clear of the Southwest and instead head to the Midwest for some epic Independence Day celebrations.

With the national holiday falling on a Saturday this year, workers across the country will be starting their holiday weekends early to extend the festivities (markets are closed on Friday). But are you travelling to a city where our nation's birth is not given its rightful celebration?

WalletHub compared the 100 largest U.S. cities based on how well they balance holiday cost and fun. The analysis took into consideration 14 different metrics such as the duration of fireworks shows, average gas prices, the number of festivals and performances, weather forecasts, hotel costs, and more.

10. Indianapolis, Indiana

Bakersfield, Calif., ranked the seventh worst city to experience July 4 on WalletHub's list. The city was ranked 98 for fewest accommodations and food service establishments per capita.

Take in the July 4 Celebration and Fireworks show at the Bright House Networks Amphitheater or participate in the Independence Day 5K or 10K race in Bakersfield.

Jersey City, N.J. ranked the sixth worst city to experience July 4 on WalletHub's list. The city tied with New York City and Chicago for the third highest average beer and wine prices.

Going to Jersey City for July 4? Unfortunately those in Jersey City won't be able to see the annual Macy's fireworks in New York Ctiy, which will be over the East River (the opposite side of Manhattan island) but Jersey City has its own festival and fireworks that it puts on over the Hudson River and a breathtaking view of the Statue of Liberty. (Sounds pretty appropriate to us!)

 

5. Wichita, Kansas

Wichita, Kansas, ranked the fifth worst city to experience July 4 on WalletHub's list. The city was ranked the worst state for weather on July 4 weekend by WalletHub.

Going to Wichita for July 4? WalletHub counts three different Fourth of July festivals and performances among the attractions happening around the city to celebrate. That said, the city is expected to bring back its fireworks show, for the first time since 2010 to "cap off a new all-day city event - the Independence Day Block Party Celebration," according to The Wichita Eagle.


4. Gilbert, Ariz.

Gilbert, Ariz., ranked the fourth worst city to experience July 4 on WalletHub's list. On the one hand, Gilbert as well as other Arizona cities, had the lowest average prices for beer and wine, as well as the fourth lowest city for a three-star hotel. Yet it was ranked the worst city for attractions and activities.

Going to Gilbert for July 4? It does host the annual Fire in the Sky event.
