The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (NYSE:BWC) announced today that a consortium that includes its Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W PGG) subsidiary has been awarded a contract by Colorado Springs Utilities to engineer, procure, construct and commission an emissions control project for the Ray D. Nixon Power Plant, located south of Colorado Springs, Colo. B&W PGG's portion of the major capital improvements being implemented at the plant is valued at approximately $40.3 million. B&W PGG will design, manufacture and construct a spray dryer absorber (SDA) to control sulfur dioxide (SO 2) emissions for the plant's 208 megawatt coal-fired unit. Colorado Springs Utilities is installing emissions controls to comply with Colorado's Regional Haze State Implementation Plan, which requires compliance with new SO 2 emission levels by Dec 31, 2017. "Colorado Springs Utilities is committed to environmental stewardship and is looking forward to working with B&W to reduce SO 2 emissions from the Nixon Power Plant," said Daniel Higgins, interim general manager of Colorado Springs Utilities' Energy Supply Department. "B&W's qualifications and experience with these types of projects supports Colorado Springs Utilities' goal to bring best-value solutions for our customers to meet emissions control regulations." "Environmental regulatory compliance is critical to the long-term viability of the U.S. coal fleet, and B&W PGG offers a full suite of technology options to assist utilities and industry in meeting emissions standards." The project is currently in the design phase, with construction slated to begin in October. The project is expected to be fully tested and in service by the end of 2017.
