FreshPet is benefiting from the healthy lifestyle trend that has moved form people to their pets, he said. People are becoming more willing to spend on their pets, so pet food has made its way to refrigerators in about 13,000 Targets (TGT) , Wal-Marts (WMT) and Krogers (KR) across the country.
"We're a very young company with a lot of runway in a very involved category," Thompson told TheStreetTV at the ICR XChange Conference in Orlando.
By "involved," Thompson is referring to another big trend -- the humanization of pets. People are investing more in their pets by treating them to human comforts like hotels, spa, and airlines. Likewise, he said, many Americans are looking to feed their pets natural foods, whether it be for health reasons or just to do something good for them.
The executive sees its customer base spreading evenly throughout the country among pet owners whose cats or dogs live inside the home.
FreshPet's released a YouTube video called, "FreshPet Holiday Feast," with producer Shareability last fall starring 13 dogs eating with human hands and one cat presiding over them at a holiday meal. The video had more than 20 million views , which Thomson said drove significant traffic to its website. He expects the exposure will translate to more sales in coming months.
