Here Are the 10 Best-Performing Technology Companies of 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Technology stocks have outperformed the broader markets this year. As of Sept. 30, 2014, the NYSE Arca Tech 100 Index gained 7.6% for the year, compared to a 1.7% gain by the NYSE Composite Index, in the same time period.

TheStreet analyzed total return data as of Sept. 30, 2014, compiled by Bloomberg. The data parameters used included U.S. Internet and software companies that are included in the Russell 3000 Index. The top 20 stocks outperformed the NYSE Arca Tech 100 List. Here’s a list of the 10 best performing tech stocks this year in ascending total return.

10.Ellie Mae

Ellie Mae (ELLI) had a total return this year of 26.16% as of Sept. 30. The $933-million market cap company provides software and services solutions for the residential mortgage industry.

9.Akamai Technology

Content delivery network, Akamai Technology (AKAM) , saw a total return of 26.62% so far this year.

8.Microsoft

Microsoft (MSFT) saw a total return of 26.71% this year through Sept. 30. The Redmond, Wash.-based maker of the Windows operating system had a total market cap of $381 billion as of the month’s end.

7.Verint Systems

Verint Systems (VRNT) had a total return this year of 30.41% as of Sept. 30. The $3.4-billion market cap company provides security and surveillance software for the financial services, retail and telecommunication industries as well as government, law enforcement, education and transportation sectors.

6. Fortinet

Network security provider Fortinet (FTNT) had a total return this year of 33.56% as of Sept. 30.

5. Unwired Planet

Unwired Planet (UPIP) , a $210-million market cap company that develops mobile technologies patents, had a total return this year of 36.23% at Sept. 30.

4.Facebook

Facebook (FB) , the $205-billion market cap social media giant, had a total return of 44.56% so far this year, making it the fourth best performer and the biggest company behind Microsoft to make the top 10 list.


3.Synchronoss Tech

Cloud-services provider, Synchronoss Technologies (SNCR) , saw a total return of 45.38% through Sept. 30 this year.

2. Palo Alto Networks

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) , a $7.85-billion market cap network security company based in Santa Clara, Calif., saw a total return of 72.75% this year through Sept. 30.

1.Vasco Data Security International

The top performing tech company this year is Vasco Data Security International (VDSI) , a $750-million market cap company that provides security solutions to financial institutions. Through Sept. 30 the Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.-based company had a total return of 142.95%.
