NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Experts who track optimal pricing for airfares and hotels differ about when is best to buy for travel this coming holiday season, but know this: they pretty much all agree that the time is coming sooner than you may think for airfares and that to delay is to pay a significant penalty.
Case in point: at Hopper, a Boston-based company that analyzes airfares for best buy opportunities, data scientist Patrick Hopper told MainStreet that his analysis urged that we get ready to act. Best buys, he said, will be found “at least 60 days out,” which means buying no later than Oct. 20 or thereabouts.
Over at San Francisco-based travel site Hipmunk, the advice is similar, but with a twist.
“On average, booking in October saved almost 20% -- nearly $80,” said a Hipmunk executive in an email to MainStreet. “Those who booked in the first week of October secured the best deals and spent $398 on average.”
