Ice Bucket Challenge for Charity? Here are 10 ALS Charities to Consider

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that afflicts 140,000 people around the world with the average sufferer succumbing to the disease about three years after diagnosis.

Awareness about the disease reached an all-time high this summer after the ALS "ice bucket challenge" went viral. In the seven weeks since the challenge was issued, the ALS Association alone has received over $120 million dollars in donations from more than 3 million people around the world.

There are multiple organizations donors can send money to that help fund research and help the families of the 30,000 Americans suffering from the disease with the financial burden of treating ALS.

However, not every ALS charity operates the same way and doing due diligence before donating to a charity is essential. Charitynavigator.org is one of the most trusted charity rating organizations on the web. This is a list of its ratings for 10 of the top ALS charities.
