10 Ridiculously Unhealthy Fast Food Burgers

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- It shouldn't be much of a surprise that fast food burgers aren't exactly the healthiest food items on the planet. They're greasy, loaded with things like special sauces and bacon which, while tasty, only add to their calorie count and fat content.

The calorie counts on fast food burgers can vary wildly, even when they're on the same menu. This list collects 10 of the highest-calorie burgers we could find. It is by no means exhaustive, but it does include 10 different fast food chains. Each chain was only given one spot so none could crowd the field too much. Not that that's a feat anyone should want to accomplish.

Some of the burgers on this list might not be a surprise, especially the burger with multiple meat patties, but there may be a few surprising omissions...

10. McDonald's Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese

Calories: 730

Fat: 40g

You expected this to be the Big Mac, didn't you? Turns out the highest-calorie burger at McDonald's is the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and its tenth on this list with 730 calories per burger. The Big Mac only has 560 calories per burger, which isn't quite enough to make it on this list. Of the 730 calories in the Double Quarter Pounder, 360 come from fat. That's not too surprising, though, given that the burger has 40g of fat, 19g of saturated fat, and 3g of trans fat.

9. Shake Shack Double SmokeShack

Calories: 850

Fat: 56g

Shake Shack's Double SmokeShack is ninth on the list with 850 calories per burger. The burger also contains 56g of total fat, about 86% of the daily recommended value, and 23g of saturated fat, about 115% of the daily recommended value.

While the Double SmokeShack has 850 calories, the Double ShackBurger could also make this list with 770 calories per burger. Adding bacon and chopped cherry pepper to the burger, it turns out, only adds about 80 calories.

8. Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger

Calories: 920

Fat: 62g

The Five Guys Bacon Cheeseburger comes in at 920 calories, placing it eighth on this list. Interestingly, Five Guys provides a useful chart for the nutritional values of all its food that include bunless burgers. Without the bun the Bacon Cheeseburger has only 660 calories, meaning the bun itself is 260 calories.

It's worth noting that regular fires from Five Guys have 953 calories, which is more than the Bacon Cheeseburger. Together a meal of a Bacon Cheeseburger and regular fries is 1,973 calories.

7. Wendy's Classic Triple with Cheese

Calories: 970

Fat: 59g

Seventh on the list, The Wendy's Classic Triple with Cheese is also the first of triple burger on the list with 970 calories per burger. Surprisingly, there are single-patty burgers that have more calories than this giant, square burger. Many of those add things like bacon which this burger lacks.

6. Smashburger Bacon Cheese - Big

Calories: 1,050

Fat: 71g

With 1,050 calories the Smashburger Bacon Cheese - Big is sixth on the list and the first burger to cross the 1,000-calorie threshold. The burger is also notable for having the most sodium of any burger on this list with 2,540mg, or 106% of the daily recommended value.

The bacon on the Bacon Cheese - Big helps add to its calorie count, as do the fried onion strips, cheese, and giant size.

5. Triple Meat Whataburger

Calories: 730

Fat: 66.2g

The second of three triple burgers on this list, the Triple Meat Whataburger comes in fifth overall with 1,107 calories per burger, according to CalorieLab. The burger has a total of 66.2g of fat, which is 101.8% of the daily recommended value, though CalorieLab wasn't able to determine the saturated or trans fat content.

4. Red Robin Whiskey River BBQ Burger

Calories: 1,114

Fat: 69g

The Red Robin Whiskey BBQ Burger comes in fourth with a total of 1,114 calories per burger. Of those calories, 621 come from the fat content of the burger, according to Fat Secret. The hamburger has a total of 69g of fat, or 165% of the daily recommended value.

Red Robin's burger also has a large amount of sodium, with 1805mg per burger. The restaurant's photo of the burger makes it look like one of the more appetizing burger on this list, if you don't mind eating more than half of your recommended calories in a single food item.

3. Jack-in-the-Box Bacon 'n Cheese Ciabatta Burger

Calories: 1,140

Fat: 79g

Third on the list is the Jack-in-the-Box Bacon 'n Cheese Ciabatta Burger with a total of 1,140 calories per burger. The burger also contains 79 grams of fat, and 18 grams of saturated fat.

The ciabatta roll sets this burger apart from the others on this list, but it doesn't help its stats too much. It still contains more calories than burgers from other fast food restaurants, even if the bread might taste a bit better.

2. Burger King Triple Whopper with Cheese

Calories: 1,230

Fat: 82g

It really shouldn't be a surprise that a burger with three layers of beef is near the top of the list. Burger King's Triple Whopper with Cheese has a total of 1,230 calories, making it the second-highest-calorie burger available from a nationwide chain on this list.

The gigantic hamburger has 71g of protein, which is 142% higher than the recommended daily amount, and it's just part of a meal. The burger also has 82g of fat, or 126% of the daily recommended value, with 32g of saturated fat.

1. Supersonic Bacon Double Cheeseburger with Mayo

Calories: 1,240

Fat: 87g

With 1,240 calories, Sonic's Supersonic Bacon Double Cheeseburger with Mayo contains more than half of the calories most humans should consume in a day. The burger also contains 87g of total fat, or 134% of the daily recommended value.

Taking off the bacon cuts the calories in the burger by 80, but no matter what you do with the Supersonic Double Cheeseburger it has more than 1,000 calories. The lowest-calorie versions of the burger are the Supersonic Jalapeno Double Cheeseburger and the Supersonic Double Cheeseburger with Mustard, both of which have 1,120 calories, and could still easily make this list.
