NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Speedway Motorsports (NYSE: TRK) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its compelling growth in net income, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, attractive valuation levels, impressive record of earnings per share growth and expanding profit margins. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company has had lackluster performance in the stock itself.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Hotels, Restaurants & Leisure industry. The net income increased by 140.1% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, rising from -$67.81 million to $27.20 million.
  • The current debt-to-equity ratio, 0.51, is low and is below the industry average, implying that there has been successful management of debt levels.
  • SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS INC reported significant earnings per share improvement in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. But, we feel it is poised for EPS growth in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS INC swung to a loss, reporting -$0.15 versus $1.01 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($0.92 versus -$0.15).
  • Regardless of the drop in revenue, the company managed to outperform against the industry average of 5.8%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly dropped by 0.5%. The declining revenue has not hurt the company's bottom line, with increasing earnings per share.

Speedway Motorsports, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as a promoter, marketer, and sponsor of motorsports activities in the United States. Speedway has a market cap of $735.6 million and is part of the services sector and leisure industry. Shares are down 12.1% year to date as of the close of trading on Friday.
