NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Best Buy will offer the iPhone 3GS for free Friday only, the company confirmed today.
Best Buy announced last week it would be offering free smartphones on the four major carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint) throughout the month of December, provided you sign a new two-year contract or renew your current contract. As we reported, though, most of the phones were already available for free on other sites, making the deal less impressive than it initially appeared.
Early today, though, rumors began swirling that the retailer was getting ready to raise the stakes by offering a free iPhone 3GS, which came out in 2009 and is normally priced at $99 for an 8GB version. A company spokesperson confirmed to MainStreet that the iPhone 3GS would be one of tomorrow’s free phones.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the iPhone marked down this season. RadioShack is taking $50 off its entire selection of iPhones for this week only, bringing the 3GS price down to $50 (and if you’re trading in an old 3GS, you can get the new iPhone 4 for $25). But free always trumps $50, so if you don’t mind getting an older generation phone (the iPhone 4 has a front-facing camera and a better screen, among other improvements), Best Buy is clearly the way to go.
According to the company, the deal will be available Friday only. And while one presumes Best Buy stocked up in preparation for the sale, it wouldn’t hurt to get there early.
