I always feel guilty when the cashier at the supermarket asks me to contribute a dollar to charity, and I sheepishly refuse. Sometimes I’ll pitch in if it sounds like a worthy charity, but usually it’s one I’ve never heard of. I’d be more likely to contribute if I were allowed to pick the charity.
Well, that’s exactly what Gap stores (Stock Quote: GPS) are doing during the next four days – and they’re also giving you 30% off your purchase. Suddenly giving to charity is a lot more attractive, isn’t it?
Here’s how it works: First, go to this site and choose your favorite charity, out of six: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, WWF (that’s the World Wildlife Fund, not the World Wrestling Federation), Feeding America, (RED), Big Brothers Big Sisters and Teach for America. Once you’ve chosen your charity, you’ll be taken to a site with a print-out coupon.
Present the coupon with your purchase at any Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Gap Outlet or Banana Republic Factory Store. You’ll get 30% off your entire purchase, and an additional 5% of the purchase will go toward the charity you chse. You can use it as many times as you’d like, and if you’d like to spread the charity love around you can always print out a new coupon for a different charity and then do a second round of shopping.
There are limitations, of course – it doesn’t apply to Keds shoes, for instance – so check the fine print. And the coupon is only good in-store through Nov. 14.
