GetJar, the second largest app store in the world (after the Apple App Store), offers free apps and makes money by selling premium placement to developers. As part of a new pilot program called GetJar+, the store will license premium games from game developer Glu Mobile and make their apps available for free for a limited time.
The first game to be distributed as part of this partnership is Stranded: Mysteries of Time, a popular adventure game which has been downloaded more than 108,000 times, according to GetJar. The full game will be available through Oct. 12 at no cost. There are no ads and it isn’t shareware, so as long as you get it by Tuesday it’s yours free, for good.
The app normally sells for $1.99 on the Android Market and $6.99 on Blackberry App World. It also sells for $1.99 on the Apple App Store, though iPhone users are out of luck – the iPod Touch/iPhone version is not available for free on GetJar. It is, however, available for all Android handsets and all major Nokia, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, LG and Motorola devices, according to a GetJar spokesperson.
After Stranded’s run is over, GetJar will offer a number of other Glu games in succession, including Race Driver Grid and Brain Genius 2. These and other Glu games will be available in the “Recommended” section of the site, so check back often to see what free games you can get.
