Gone are the days of using a clothes iron to press your panini. For $10, you can get a sandwich maker that doubles as a lean, mean grilling machine.
The George Foreman 36" Grill and Sandwich Maker is now just $10 at Wal-Mart (Stock Quote: WMT) – a discount of only $5, but a great deal all the same. You still have to pay for shipping, but if you live near a Wal-Mart you can ship to the store for free and pick it up there.
As always, a few caveats are in order. First, that 36” is actually square inches, so you’re not getting a grill the size of a TV – it’s actually just six inches per side. That means more counter space, but also that you’ll have to prepare one sandwich or burger at a time. Still, this is ideal if you’re mainly cooking for one.
If you’re new to the George Foreman game there are plenty of sites offering both recipes and grilling tips, and the little machine can make everything from Grilled Lamb with Figs and Eggplant to a simple grilled cheese.
At this point supplies are limited, so only two colors are still available: “Competitive Orange” and a shade of purple called “Lolita.” If you don’t mind those colors, and you’re a college student or a studio-dweller short on counter space, this grill looks like a lightweight champ.
