Procter & Gamble (Stock Quote: PG), maker of Iams and Eukanuba pet foods, is recalling yet another variety of its products, this time because certain varieties of its veterinary and specialized dry foods were possibly contaminated with salmonella. The woes for P&G began last June, when the company recalled some of its Iams cat foods due to low levels of thiamine. Just last week the company announced a recall of a variety of its prescription dry cat food—that is, Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs with lot codes 01384174B4 and 0134174B2—after a Food & Drug Administration analysis found the product tested positive for salmonella contamination.
In a July 30 press release, P&G cites the following products as potentially harmful: Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Eukanuba Pure and Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin. The company is recalling all sizes and varieties of the product with sell by dates of July 1, 2010-Dec. 1, 2011.
While no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported, this is cause for concern for pets and pet owners alike. Simply handling the product can lead to infection.
