The position: Assistant winemaker for E&J Gallo Winery
Location: Livingston, Calif.
Job duties: Supports all activities of the winemaking process, from influencing the growing of the grapes to overseeing the quality of the wine delivered to the consumer. Job duties include tasting wines to conduct evaluations and make recommendations as to how to improve wine quality. Participates in certain aspects of wine grapes including grape assessment, harvest and analysis. Responsible for completion and success of winemaking and wine processing trials and experiments. Also trains and mentors lab technicians and interns.
The company: E&J Gallo Winery was founded by brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo more than 75 years ago. Today the company is the world's largest family-owned winery. Based in Modesto, Calif., the winery markets more than 60 brands.
Requirements: Must have bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, food science or a related field, plus one year of chemistry, food science or winemaking experience. Five years of winemaking or chemistry experience may be substituted for a degree. Preferred candidates will have experience with writing reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals and will also have experience presenting information to mangers, clients and the general public. Knowledge of winemaking equipment, processes and procedures is a big plus. Requires working in a variety of climatic conditions. Candidates must have a valid California driver's license and a clean driving record.
