The only thing Americans love more than food is an excuse to eat, which might explain why there are so many food-focused holidays on the calendar. We have National Chocolate Cake Day in January, National Pancake Day in February and even a National Pizza Week in May. And tomorrow there is another great food day.
Friday is National Donut Day and two of the biggest donut chains in the country are giving out freebies to celebrate. Krispy Kreme (Stock Quote: KKD) will be handing out one free donut per customer in participating stores nationwide, no purchase necessary. Dunkin Donuts will also be giving out free donuts, but customers must purchase a drink to get one. Other smaller chains and shops like LaMar’s will also be giving out one free glazed donut per customer tomorrow. Their deal is good all day.
National Donut Day is more than just a PR concoction. It is actually inspired by the efforts of Salvation Army workers who served coffee and donuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday officially began in 1938 as a fundraising measure by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army.
So remember, as you’re gorging yourself on sickly sweet donuts tomorrow, you are actually part of a proud and storied history.
