Target announced yesterday it will be selling Amazon’s (Stock Quote: AMZN) Kindle in its stores beginning June 6. This is the first time the popular e-reader will be available in traditional brick and mortar stores, as opposed to Amazon’s own Web site.
“Our guests’ response to Kindle has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mark Schindele, Target’s Senior Vice President said in a press release. “We are thrilled to bring guests nationwide this incredibly light, portable, easy-to-read product that allows them to get all the news and books they want.”
Amazon no longer has a monopoly on the digital book industry. Since the Kindle’s initial release in 2007, Sony (Stock Quote: SNE), Hewlett Packard (Stock Quote: HPQ), Barnes and Nobles (Stock Quote: BKS) , Samsung and Apple (Stock Quote: AAPL) have all released their own e-reader devices. Target, which has 1,740 stores in 49 states, can help Amazon stay competitive in the growing market
