BOSTON (TheStreet) — Americans love baseball, but they love free stuff even more. It doesn't matter what's being given away.
Major League Baseball, which begins its season next week, will rely on giveaways and promotions to lure budget-conscious spectators to games this year. Some freebies will be as unoriginal as bobblehead dolls and post-game fireworks. But some will be clever and creative, such as the White Sox's Mullet Night and the Brewer's Stitch n' Pitch deal.
Here are some of the best and worst promotions fans can look forward to this season.
Chicago White Sox
Start growing your hair Sox fans, because July 30 is Mullet Night at U.S. Cellular Field. All fans wearing a mullet hairstyle, whether it's real or a wig, can participate in the Mullet March. The first 500 mullet marchers will get free T-shirts.
Sox players will also participate in Mullet Night, whether they want to or not. During the game, mullets will be superimposed on players' pictures on the park's digital scoreboard. And if you are brave enough, Mullet Night sponsor Great Clips will have several haircut stations around the stadium. Donations collected at these stations will benefit the Ronald McDonald House and White Sox Charities.
The Indians will offer a "Lunch and Three Innings" deal to encourage local workers to take their lunch breaks at Progressive Field. For $15, fans get seats and $10 vouchers to use in the park during select afternoon games.
During the Indians' "Beach Weekend" from July 16 to July 18, fans can watch fireworks and take home free floppy hats. Children under 12 will receive free Webkinz stuffed animals.
