Bank of America (Stock Quote: BAC) tells us that while their consumer Web site was indeed down most of the day on Friday, there was never any security risk to account holders’ personal data. So, in other words, if you’re a BofA customer, the bank says you don’t have to worry about your Social Security number floating around out there as a result of this outage.
They are still investigating the root cause of the problem, a BofA spokesperson told us, and let’s hope they find it. As we reported on Friday, BofA initially told their Twitter followers that only a “few” of their customers were experiencing the outage. It turned out to be quite a bit more widespread, though the true extent of the outage remains largely unknown. However, a Google (Stock Quote: GOOG) blog search for the phrase “Bank of America web site down” yields more than 20,000 results posted since Friday.
This wouldn’t be the first time the bank has had to deal with some bad press. Check out our recent slideshow about dissatisfied BofA customers and former employees going viral with their grievances.
