Jamie Varon, an avid Twitter user and Web design pro, knew she wanted to work at Twitter. So, rather than just idly hoping for something to open up, she put her Web savvy to use and created TwitterShouldHireMe.com to get the word out.
The tweetosphere (a dubious word if ever there was one) spread her message far and wide. It led to a bunch of traditional media coverage earlier this year, including an interview with CNN and a feature on Fortune's Web site.
So how did it all work out for her? Varon ended up having lunch with Evan Williams and Biz Stone, the two famous founders of Twitter (Williams has even been on The Oprah Winfrey Show to show Oprah how to soup up her Twitter presence).
But lunch ended up being just lunch: the Twitterheads couldn't find a good match for her at the company, despite her obvious talents and lack of shyness when it comes to self-promotion.
What happened after the media frenzy died down is definitely interesting: she moved to Rome and now considers herself "location independent" as she owns her own Web design company, Shatterboxx Media. We asked her how this was going. "Oh, it's amazing, I can live anywhere in the world!" she told us on the phone, adding that Shatterboxx is booked up to at least December... A quick perusal of her site shows some serious progress already: her firm designed the new site for well-respected business author & guru, Keith Ferrazzi.
We don't know about you, but it's frankly nice to see that someone can still make it on their own, without hitting the capricious career jackpot. Sure, she came close to Twitterdom's golden ticket, but maybe independence is what she was after all along.
