Recall Watch: Falling Fans, Bassinet Baby Danger

Consumers, especially those with infants or ceiling fans, should be aware: Two consumer recalls are serious business because ignoring the dangers they pose could be harmful, even fatal.

Re-recalled Bassinets Cause Strangulations

The Consumer Product Safety Commission re-announced a previous recall of about 900,000 baby bassinets after two more deaths have been reported since its initial recall announcement last summer.

The convertible "close-sleeper/bedside sleeper" bassinets were manufactured by Simplicity and sold at Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us, Kmart (Stock Quote: SHLD) Corp., Big Lots! (Stock Quote: BIG), Target (Stock Quote: TGT), J.C. Penney (Stock Quote: JCP), (Stock Quote: AMZN), Bed Bath & Beyond (Stock Quote: BBBY) and other retailers nationwide.

Before the initial recall, a six-and-a-half month old girl and a four-month-old girl died after being trapped between the bassinet’s metal bars.

Simplicity appears to no longer be in business, but retailers will provide a refund or store credit to consumers who return the product to the store where purchased, the CPSC says.

Falling Ceiling Fans

Thin-bladed, aluminum and gloss-white finished ceiling fans are also being recalled due to a risk that the fan can fall from the ceiling unexpectedly. About 1,300 Pensi Ceiling Fans made by the Modern Fan Co. are affected by the recall. This follows four reports of incidents where the fan fell from the ceiling while operating because a part that connecting to the fan’s motor can break.

The fans were sold at lighting showrooms, fan specialty stores and electrical distributors nationwide as well as by online retailers from August 2008 to July 2009 for between $400 and $530.

Consumers are urged to immediately turn off the power to the fan, to not allow anyone underneath it, and contact the Modern Fan Co. for a replacement coupler. If the fan does fall, consumers should immediately turn off the circuit breaker due to the possibility of exposed electrical wires.

The Modern Fan Co. can be reached at (888) 588-3267 or for more information.
