Restaurant-goers craving a burger should beware: more ground beef is being recalled on E. coli contamination concerns.
Sterling Pacific Meat Co. is recalling thousands of pounds of ground beef that could be contaminated with E. coli, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The Cattleman's Choice ground beef patties were distributed wholesale to food service companies that distributed the patties to restaurants in California and Arizona. The USDA says it has no reason to believe that the beef has been sold to retailers.
“The problem was discovered by FSIS during a review of the establishment's records,” the USDA says. The beef is subject to a Class I recall, the most serious type of USDA recall based on the probability that use of recalled product will cause serious health problems and even death. The USDA hasn’t received any reports of illnesses caused by the consumption of the recalled meat.
The recalled patties, sliders and 2.5-ounce “baby ground beef patties,” which are described as 80% lean, were produced on May 18, 2009. For more information, visit USDA.gov.
Symptoms associated with E. coli infection can surface between one and ten days after exposure to contaminated meat, starting with mild stomach pain that worsens over several days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
