Want to sell your house but not sure if the real estate agent is legit? We’ve shown how to choose a good agent, but now, here are seven things to look out for that will help you red flag a bad agent. If the agent in question displays one or more of these qualities, think twice before hiring them.
1. If an agent does not return your calls or respond to your email queries in a timely fashion, move on. Agents who don’t respond quickly are clearly too busy for you.
2. If an agent tells you, “Don’t worry about it,” regarding something you do not understand, you should worry about it.
3. Be wary of an agent who cannot accurately describe what you are looking for from a transaction after just one meeting. An agent’s job is to quickly and fully comprehend your real estate needs. Anyone lacking that quality, is not effective for you.
4. If an agent frequently cuts you off mid-sentence or requires that you reiterate what you’re looking for, move along little doggy.
5. If an agent mentions Zillow or any other public property valuation sites, run like the wind. These programs are fun for a consumer to play around on, but they are not legitimate tools for a real estate agent to assess property value or determine at what number a house should list or sell.
6. If an agent takes you around to all their listings first and continues to show you properties that do not match the criteria you’ve laid out, hit the road. In this instance, they’re obviously not listening to you and are more interested in showing you the property he/she wants to sell and not the one you want to buy.
7. If an agent frequently mentions a particular property as a ‘deal’ or pressures you to make an offer, get away as fast as you can. This is an indication the agent is simply looking for a quick commission and not looking out for your best interest, or for the right home for you.
