A holiday born out of The Great Depression is paying dividends for breakfast this recession.
National Donut Day, observed on the first Friday of June (this year that's June 5), was started by the Salvation Army in 1938 as a sugar-coated boost for the needy. Perhaps nearly as relevant during today’s “Great Recession,” be sure to visit your local participating Krispy Kreme to get your free donut (Stock Quote: KKD).
While slightly less sweet, on the same day participating Dunkin Donuts stores are also offering one free donut, with the purchase of any beverage.
Aside from these two baked-goods titans, many local retailers are also offering promotions for National Donut Day. If you’re quick enough, you can probably stop by every store in your area for complimentary donuts. Just be sure to wipe the crumbs off your lapel after every stop.
