Each week MainStreet takes a look at what we call Extreme Real Estate. This week we bring you: Floating Home.
Whether it’s an ocean, lake, river or stream, homebuyers are often willing to pay a premium for living or vacationing near water. However, for those who find that living next to the water just isn’t close enough, there are houseboats. We’re not talking about the old-school aluminum trailer style houseboats that sit on pontoons and float around over-loaded with beer drinkers and itty bitty bikini wearers. The houseboats we’re talking about are stationary structures hovering over the water, that look like and offer all the creature comforts of a traditional house with the sound of water gently lapping the under side of the floor.
Just like buyers of houses on terra firma, houseboat buyers options are only limited by budget. Here are two that we love. One for big buck, and another for relatively few.
Floating & Fabulous
In Seattle, WA, which has a long-standing culture of houseboat living, a luxurious 2,000 sf foot residence at the end of a long dock on picturesque Portage Bay is available at $2,850,000.
The two story, open plan layout–which is arguably more house than boat–contains 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms including a master suite with walk-in closet and a spa style bathroom with a jetted soaking tub and separate shower. On the main floor, the living room has vaulted ceilings, skylights, wood floors, a wood burning stove, custom cabinetry, and a cook’s kitchen with a Viking brand range and Sub Zero refrigerator.
Exterior spaces include multiple waterside decks, a hot tub, private dock space, a rare, landside private 2-car garage and 50% interest in 9 moorage slips for additional income or parking a private fleet of pleasure boats.

A Community on the Water
At the other end of the affordability scale is Ben Paratore’s floating getaway dubbed “Southern Comforts” and located in a gated community of stationary houseboats just outside Bainbridge, GA on the Chattahootchie River. The single level houseboat measures just 880 square feet including both interior and exterior spaces.
There are 2 modestly sized bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, a full kitchen for cooking up the day’s catch, a vaulted ceiling and large entertainment decks on both the land and water sides. When tired of the view of the undeveloped woods across the river there are two flat screen televisions and wireless internet hookups.
The houseboat, offered at $150,000, includes a monthly slip fee of $232 a that covers the cost of electricity, septic, water, cable and Internet services as well as access to the community’s amenities that include a clubhouse, swimming pool, volleyball court, picnic areas and a floating tiki hut.
