E-filers may still be able to take advantage of free tax preparation and significant discounts using online promotional codes this tax season, a time when every dollar counts.

In addition to free filing options available through the IRS web site, PromotionalCodes.com is featuring a number of legitimate discount offers on TurboTax (Stock Quote: INTU), H&R Block’s TaxCut (Stock Quote: HRB) and other tax preparation software.

The web site (which partners with online retailers to provide discount codes for food, clothing, gadgets and other items) is offering last minute tax preparers 10% off TurboTax software and 15% off TaxCut products, discounts that weren’t available last year. These deals can even be used in conjunction with free online federal e-filing to receive a discount on state tax preparation.  Just enter the code when you check out.

Possibly the cheapest way to do your taxes online is to use FreeTaxUSA.com, says Alexis Caldwell, who brokers deals with online retailers for PromotionalCodes.com.  If you live in certain states where the service is available and your annual gross income is $56,000 or less, you can file free and pay just $9.95 to file a simple state return.
