AmEx Offers Double Rewards on Gas, Groceries

American Express card holders have a new reason to charge gas and groceries.

Here’s the deal: American Express (Stock Quote: AXP) is kicking off a nationwide promotion that will give all consumer charge card members who register double rewards points on U.S. standalone store gas and grocery purchases from March 22, 2009 to March 15, 2010.

For those who aren’t current cardholders: If you apply and are approved between April 1 and June 30, you’ll be automatically enrolled in the promotion for 12 months beginning the day your card is created.

Any charges made at gas stations or grocery stores, up to $1,000 per month, will count for double reward points, says AmEx spokeswoman Molly Faust. Any charge after $1,000, counts for single rewards points.

One catch: Faust says that the deal is not good for charges at departments of superstores such as Target (Stock Quote: TGT) or warehouse clubs such as BJ’s Wholesale Club (Stock Quote: BJ)

Rewards points can then be redeemed for airline tickets, hotels, consumer electronics and a range of other things advertised on the company’s membership rewards page.
