NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Like the moon landing, everyone remembers where they were when Nabisco introduced the Double Stuf Oreo. Now the cookie maker is shaking up the snack world again with an insane cookie creation called the Triple Double Oreo.
The “double” refers to the two layers of frosting – one original vanilla, one chocolate – while the “triple” refers to the three cookie layers, one of which is nestled, Big Mac-style, between the two frosting layers.
This cookie has been in the works for a long time now. Early photos of the product leaked on the Internet back in May, and shortly thereafter the company announced that it would be released this summer. That day came today, and a full-fledged marketing campaign along with it.
Four athletes will be promoting the cookie: retired basketball star Shaquille O’Neal (which makes sense, since the product is named after a basketball stat), quarterback Eli Manning, tennis player Venus Williams and Olympic speed skater Apollo Ohno.
The cookies will be available starting this week with a suggested retail price of $4.19 per package. Each cookie is 100 calories, so if you’re on a 2,000-calorie diet you can have 20 of these if you’re willing to forgo all other food for the day.
Recently, MainStreet spoke to food industry analyst Phil Lempert on Oreo-maker Kraft’s announcement it would split into two companies. “Do we need yet another double-stuffed chocolate Oreo in the U.S.? No,” he said. Apparently, Kraft disagreed.
