4 Apps to Help You Survive a Heat Wave

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Much of the south and southwestern U.S. is broiling in triple-digit temperatures similar to the heat wave that smacked the central and eastern U.S. in July.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans stuck in this heat wave, the best thing you can do is to stay well-hydrated and near an air conditioner, but if you do have to go outside, you may want to make use of these smartphone apps to stay safe and healthy.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel app is one of the most popular free apps on the iPhone and Android phones, and for good reason. This easy-to-use app lets you view multiday forecasts and weather patterns mapped out by region and will alert you when the weather poses potential safety risks, all particularly helpful tools to have.

Coppertone MyUVAlert

Throughout the summer, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun, but it’s especially important to do so during a heat wave. This app from Coppertone displays the strength of solar UV radiation by region and recommends the appropriate amount of clothing and sunscreen needed to protect yourself from those rays. What’s more, since this app was made by a sunscreen company it also has a built-in feature that sends you reminders when it’s time to reapply sunscreen. The app is available for free on the iPhone.

Swimming Pools Directory

What better way to beat the heat than by going for a swim? The Swimming Pools Directory shows the locations, contact information and membership details for more than 4,000 swimming pools around the country so you can find the pool nearest you. This iPhone app costs 99 cents, which does seem a little steep for information you could probably find on Google, but the time it saves you in searching for a nearby pool on a hot day may just make it worth the money.
