The market research company found many of Verizon’s current BlackBerry and Android users plan to replace their existing smartphones with Apple’s (Stock Quote: AAPL) iPhone when it debuts with the carrier Thursday.
Taken by brand, 66% percent of Blackberry users said they plan to make the switch, while 44% of Android users plan to purchase an iPhone on Verizon’s launch day. More than a quarter of current AT&T (Stock Quote: T) customers (26%) also intend to switch to Verizon’s iPhone as soon as it becomes available.
The survey was conducted online among 727 U.S. residents between Jan. 28 and Jan. 31.
So why are these consumers deflecting? The answers varied depending on which device participants currently own.
Android and Blackberry users, for example, said they were swayed by the iPhone’s cool features, including the interface (60%), web browser (58%), media (51%), memory (43%) and camera (41%).
But for AT&T customers, the reasons were more service-related. Nearly half the respondents cited dropped calls as their motivation to defect, which comes as no surprise since AT&T’s iPhone 4 has become notorious for its reception issues since its launch in July.
Of course there’s no guarantee that Verizon’s iPhone will be flawless and those who plan to stick with AT&T said they were doing it due to technical concerns. Among these customers, 25% feared a decline in value from Verizon’s service, 22% were concerned about network speed and 26% were reluctant to be part of a product’s initial rollout.
In contrast, 46% of Android users said they would remain loyal due to the hefty costs of the new device. Verizon’s 16 GB model costs $199 while the 32 GB model costs $299. As we’ve reported, those prices are only good with a new two-year contract, which includes $59.99 a month for unlimited talk and text plus another $29.99 a month for an unlimited data plan.
