NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Retailers rarely miss an opportunity to have a sale in conjunction with a holiday weekend, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day is no exception. The fact that it takes place in early January means that stores with stock still left over from Christmas are going to be discounting heavily to try to clear the decks, usually by taking an extra discount on clearance items.
We’re seeing a few sales that will be taking place this weekend – some explicitly linking their discounts to MLK weekend and some just referring to it as a “winter weekend” sale. Kmart, for instance, is taking an extra 10% off a variety of items, plus up to 70% off clearance toys. Aeropostale is taking an extra 40% off items in its clearance section online, as long as you use the code CLEAR40. And Express is knocking an extra 30% off clearance items online for men and women, but only though Monday.
The most enticing sale, though, comes courtesy of Old Navy. The clothing retailer is taking up to 80% off for its in-store weekend sale by knocking an extra 40% off select clearance items. The sale began at 9 a.m. Friday and runs through Monday at 9 p.m., so you’ve got the whole long weekend to shop. As always, though, get there as early as possible while the good stuff is still available.
