Apparently, not everyone got what they wished for last year.
Dec. 30 marked Amazon’s (Stock Quote: AMZN) release of its annual “most popular” and “most wished-for” lists for 2010, and taken together, they reveal some disparities between what customers wanted and what Amazon actually sold.
Though bookworms may have been pleased with Stieg Larsson’s bestselling The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, as each book made both the lists, movie buffs clamoring for a DVD or Blu-Ray copy of Leonardo DiCaprio’s mind-bending Inception, for example, were more likely to take home a copy of Sandra Bullock’s Oscar-winning hit, The Blind Side, instead.
On the music side of the spectrum, the Black Eyed Peas’ party anthem, “I Gotta Feeling,” reached more than six million digital downloads last June, although Amazon's Top 40 fans seemed more keen on hearing Taylor Swift, whose third album of country ballads, Speak Now, topped both Amazon lists and moved a record-breaking 1 million copies in the first week of its release.
In the land of laptops, consumers asked for (and received) Apple’s 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, but on the smartphone side, Samsung’s Captivate Droid unexpectedly bested the lesser-known LG KP500 Cookie unlocked phone. No one we know even uses the LG device, but even more confounding is the conspicuous absence of the iPhone 4G, a top seller at most other outlets.
Finally, as the e-book wars rage on, Amazon wants everyone to believe that everyone wants a Kindle. That may be true, since the device actually placed first on both lists, but like competitor Barnes & Noble (Stock Quote: BKS), Amazon has remained mum on exact sales figures, despite end-of-year market speculation that the device would sell 8 million copies.
