NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Whole Foods recalled 61 of its baked products over the holiday weekend, after food supplier Rolf’s Patisserie was connected to several outbreaks of food poisoning.
The recall affects baked goods - including tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries, pies - and prepped food items, such as quiches and pot pies, being sold in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
It also involves gingerbread houses, so anyone who has one leftover from their Christmas festivities should dispose of the decorative item in a sealed container so that other people and animals cannot get access to and eat them.
The Whole Foods recall follows the one issued by Rolf’s Patisserie, a gourmet European style bakery located in Lincolnwood, Ill., who recalled all of its desserts made after Nov. 1. The products were voluntarily recalled after the Food and Drug Administration linked the bakery to several outbreaks of staphylococcus aureus food poisoning.
According to the FDA, staphylococcus aureus can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The illness is usually mild and most patients recover after one to three days. In a small minority of cases, some affected individuals, especially the very young and old, may require medical treatment for dehydration from vomiting and/or diarrhea.
One hundred cases of illness have been reported from four separate events in November and December. Three of the events occurred in Illinois and the other occurred in Wisconsin.
So far, no illnesses have been reported from consumers eating products sold by Whole Foods Market.
Rolf’s Patisserie desserts are sold online and through retailers and wholesalers, as well as through the bakery’s catering service. As such, the products may not carry a Rolf’s Patisserie label. Consumers can check the FDA website for more information of the baked goods that may have been affected.
Patrons of Whole Foods can check the recall for a full list of affected products.
Those who have purchased any of the listed products from Whole Foods Market may return them to the store for a full refund. They may also contact Whole Foods Market at 512-542-0878 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CST.
