Dow Today: Visa (V) Leads The Day Higher, Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) Lags

The Dow component that led the way higher today was Visa (NYSE: V), which sported a $1.46 gain (+0.7%) bringing the stock to $217. This single gain lifted the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 11.05 points or roughly accounting for 39.5% of the Dow's overall gain. Volume for Visa ended the day at 1.4 million shares traded vs. an average daily trading volume of 2.8 million shares.

Visa has a market cap of $107.95 billion and is part of the financial sector and financial services industry. Shares are down 3.2% year-to-date as of Thursday's close. The stock's dividend yield sits at 0.7%.

Visa Inc., a payments technology company, operates as a retail electronic payments network worldwide. The company facilitates commerce through the transfer of value and information among financial institutions, merchants, consumers, businesses, and government entities.

Although the company may harbor some minor weaknesses, we feel they are unlikely to have a significant impact on results.

Holding the Dow back today was Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM), which lagged the broader Dow index with an 83-cent decline (-0.8%) bringing the stock to $101.74. Volume for Exxon Mobil Corporation ended the day at 7.7 million shares traded vs. an average daily trading volume of 9.5 million shares.

Exxon Mobil Corporation has a market cap of $446.33 billion and is part of the basic materials sector and energy industry. Shares are up 1.4% year-to-date as of Thursday's close. The stock's dividend yield sits at 2.7%.
