NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Fans were devastated when Comcast's (CMCSA) NBCUniversal cancelled Sony's (SNE) Sony Pictures Television's Community this past May. The sitcom created by Dan Harmon and starring Joel McHale and Yvette Nicole Brown delved into the hilariously complicated lives of students attending a community college in the fictitious Greendale, Colorado.
The cancellation spurred the Save Community petition campaign, whereby fans demanded NBC reverse its decision to cancel the show.
Community's revival appeared promising when online streaming service Hulu, a joint-venture of NBCUniversal, 21st Century Fox's (FOXA) Fox Broadcasting and Disney's (DIS) ABC Television, was rumored to pick up the show. Hulu was already streaming the show's five previous seasons online. But that deal fell through.
So, when all appeared doomed for the sitcom, an unlikely savior appeared in the form of Yahoo! (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer. Yahoo! Online and Sony Pictures Television announced on Monday that Community will be given a sixth season online. McHale, Brown and Gillian Jacobs will be returning alongside creator Dan Harmon for the coming season's 13 episodes.
Cast members and showrunner Dan Harmon took to Twitter (TWTR) to show their gratitude. Harmon tweeted, "It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden. My love is stronger than my fear of death #SixSeasonsandAMovie." Joel McHale simply posted, "Sixth Season #CommunitySixthSeason."
Community will be joining two original TV-length comedies on Yahoo! Screen. In April, Mayer revealed Yahoo!'s vision to provide consumers with digital video and content in an April press release; a move that could put the company in competition with the likes of Hulu, Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX) and other video-streaming services.
But above all else, Yahoo! credits the Community revival to its loyal fans.
