NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Women have recently started to outpace men in the graduation rate at the college level. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 61% of females earn a bachelor's degree at a four-year institution within six years compared to 56% of males.
But where is the cream of the crop? Where do the most intellectual women spend their collegiate years sharpening their minds and preparing to enter the work force? Fortunately, we have an answer.
The folks at Niche, specifically the College Prowler section, have set up an excellent system that allows users to sort and rank colleges by dozen of categories and subcategories, including Greek life, academics, athletics and more. So we decided to put the system to work and uncover the Top 10 U.S. Colleges with the Smartest Women, according to Niche users.
We've included the rankings for each college, along with the most useful comments from actual users, many of whom are or were students at each university. So without further ado, our first entry is...
10) University of Virginia
Location: Charlottesville, Va.
"You will find every type of guy and girl imaginable from the serious to the party frat, from the jock to the future internationally renown researcher, from the country boy to the future Wall Streeter." - College Freshman
"The guys and girls at UVa are fantastic. I've met some of my best friends, and most everyone here is smart, ambitious, and well-rounded. It's easy to find your niche in such a trusting and diverse community." - College Freshman
9) Smith College (All women's college)
Location: Northampton, Mass.
"Empowering Women - Smith, an all female institution is full of young, intelligent women working to empower others of their gender. Women at Smith typically tend to be somewhat rebellious, skeptical and very strong minded. Most women tend to go against the stereotypical norms of what it means to be a woman by social standards. That is, women have short hair cuts, fitted ball caps, sagging skinny jeans, facial piercings, tattoos and 'I will fight for my rights' attitudes. Many women at Smith find themselves fighting for gay rights, transsexual rights and for the rights of any group of individuals that do not fit into America's social system." - College Senior
"So there are no guys at Smith, which was a little daunting at first. Looking back, I don't regret an all-women's education at all. The Smith women are competitive, amazing, intelligent and overall high achievers. It's truly empowering to surround yourself in such an environment. There is no dress code at Smith. You can really be who ever you want to be, and no one will look twice. Guys can be a bit hard to find on campus, but they are abundant at UMass, Amherst and Hampshire. If you want to meet others of the opposite sex, it is certainly not hard to do so." - College Senior
8) Agnes Scott College (All women's college)
Location: Decatur, Ga.
"[T]here is no one way to categorize Agnes Scott Scotties. Feisty, fierce, and fabulous are some words that come to mind, but we don't really hold with traditional standards of beauty here. You'll find that Scotties rely on their brains as well as their beauty to get ahead at Agnes Scott." - College Junior
7) Rice University
Location: Houston, Texas
"SMART! Easy to get to know. Upper classmen are very helpful and don't treat Freshmen any different from older students." - College Freshman
