Charles Schwab today announced that it has renewed its licensing agreement with global action campaign Girl Rising to screen their award-winning documentary at branches and other local venues across the country for the benefit of clients, Schwab employees and their families. In 2013, Schwab hosted more than 100 screenings of the film, and the new agreement runs through the end of 2014. Girl Rising, directed by Oscar-nominated director Richard E. Robbins, follows nine unforgettable young women, from nine different developing countries including Haiti, Ethiopia, Afghanistan and Cambodia. They each embark on a journey fueled by hope, but fraught with challenges, as they strive to get an education and improve their lives. “At Schwab, we believe in the power of personal ownership to effect change in our own lives and society at large,” said Kelly Livers, Charles Schwab vice president and regional branch executive based in Atlanta. Livers is also national chairperson for Women’s Interactive Network (WINs) at Schwab, a community supporting and acting on the intentional inclusion of women for their financial well-being. “The young women in Girl Rising are incredible examples of that power, and it has been an honor to share these inspirational stories in our local communities.” ”Many millions of children around the world lack access to education, whether due to poverty, social norms, or accessibility. Girls, especially, face significant barriers to the basic right of education, including obstacles such as early and forced marriage and gender-based violence and discrimination,” said Tara Abrahams, president of Girl Rising. “As Girl Rising draws attention to these real and disheartening circumstances, it also showcases how young women can overcome seemingly impossible odds to pursue their dreams.” In addition to hosting screenings for clients and employees, some Schwab branches are also partnering with local non-profits and schools to share Girl Rising and its message with their broader communities. Schwab has more than 300 branches across the country. To find a Schwab branch and learn more about local Girl Rising screenings, visit the Schwab Branch Locator.
