Binge Watching This Weekend? Netflix Debuts 'Orange is the New Black' Season 2

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - Summer may be here, but Orange is the New Black fans may be staying inside this weekend to binge watch the second season, which debuted on Netflix (NFLX) on Friday.

The 13-episode season is sure to bring even more craziness as the first season left off with Piper, played by Taylor Schilling, beating up Doggett, another inmate.

The comedic drama from Jenji Kohan, the creator of Weeds, is the story of Brooklynite Piper Chapman who is sent to a women's prison for a 15-month long detention following a decade-old crime that she never thought she'd get busted for. Chapman is forced to leave her comfortable city life with her fiance Larry, played by Jason Biggs, for an orange prison jumpsuit and the life-changing experience that prison culture brings. But don't let this series fool you, it is highly entertaining, funny and downright out-of-its-mind -- essentially perfect for Netflix for the risky issues it tackles.

The first season debuted on Netflix last summer and just last month the writers tweeted that Orange is the New Black was picked up for a third season by Netflix.

Orange is the New Black follows on the heels of House of Cards, which debuted its second season in February. Netflix has been moving forward with its lineup of original content. Last month, the second season of Ricky Gervais's comedy, Derek, was made available to subscribers. Netflix announced that the second season of Hemlock Grove will be available for streaming on July 11. On August 1, the six-episode, fourth and final season of The Killing will premiere with lots of other shows in the works.

The streaming service is looking to add more original content. As it competes with Amazon (AMZN) and more traditional cable channels like Time Warner's (TWX) HBO for content, Netflix has recently increased the price of its streaming service subscription by $1 in the U.S. to $8.99 a month for new customers to combat its rising content expenses - both to create original series and to acquire shows.
