NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- If you know about Baccarat, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious crystal companies, you probably know its typical offerings include such things as tableware that costs from a few hundred to thousands of dollars, to chandeliers for as much as $90,000 and vases and candelabras that cost anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000.
Now Baccarat is branching into the luxury housing and hotel business.
The company is breaking into its new market with a $60 million duplex penthouse atop a 50-story residential and hotel tower in midtown Manhattan.
The penthouse is part of The Baccarat Hotel & Residences New York, with a total of 60 private residences, ranging from one to four bedrooms. The flagship tower will also include a 114-room luxury hotel.
Prices for the residences start at $3.95 million.
The penthouse, available for residency toward the end of the year, is a staggering 7,381 square feet with five bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms and a dizzying list of luxury details that could fill an issue of Architectural Digest. The space includes such things as 93-feet high floor-to-ceiling windows and awe-inspiring views of Central Park, the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center.
Sophisticated yet inviting is how Baccarat describes its grand penthouse creation.
"The home is still under construction, so that warm and welcoming homey feeling is coming," says Baccarat Senior Sales Director Larry Kruysman. "We don't have walls up yet. But one of the best things about this property is its midtown location -- it's right across from MOMA, walking distance to Central Park, the theater, and fabulous shopping on Fifth Avenue."
Some of the other tantalizing details about the deluxe penthouse home include an oversized living room on the first floor and a double-height loggia spanning the length of the home's east facade. The living room has a floating gas fireplace and a wet bar. The flooring is 6-inch wide plank white oak solid wood that's been treated with a custom ebony mahogany stain and semi-gloss finish.
The eat-in kitchen features sleek white granite counters, custom cabinets made of high-gloss lacquer ebonized walnut, brushed stainless steel panels and polished nickel frames.
Upstairs there's a master suite that at 1,150 feet is larger than many New York City apartments. The suite is in its own dedicated wing and includes a corner bedroom, separate sitting room with gas fireplace and dual dressing rooms.
Each room in this airy home has been decorated by interior designer Tony Ingrao with a palette of exotic woods, white onyx, frosted mirror glass and polished chrome finishes.
Of course, no Baccarat home would be complete without a few crystal details incorporated into the design. The home will feature a signature light fixture in the foyer and a Zircote wood-paneled entry door with a crystal inlay handle.
"We originally thought these homes would be very attractive to overseas purchasers, someone looking for luxury living in Midtown Manhattan," Kruysman says. "And we do have a lot of international clients. But the majority of purchasers are from the United States -- Florida, Texas, Washington state -- all people who come to New York City frequently and who want a pied-a-terre."
"It's a very diverse age range of buyers as well," Kruysman says. "Young families up to retirees and people who own three or four homes around the world."
Another perk for whoever buys this over-the-top home is access to the Baccarat Hotel's many offerings, including 24-hour concierge service, a state-of-the-art fitness center, spa and housekeeping services.
The hotel is scheduled to open around November.

"So if you're traveling to NYC, you can use [an iPad or smartphone app] to have a maid sent in, or have the fridge restocked, or set up a massage or to tell someone to send a car to the airport to pick you up. Plus you can check to see what temperature it is in your home."
