NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Sales of hogs, aka motorcycles, have continued to ride back from the depths of hell known as the Great Recession. Excluding Earth-friendly scooters, sales of motorcycles increased 3% in 2013. In units, however, at 465,000 sold last year, the total remained about 50% below the peak hit in 2007.
Nevertheless, industry leader Harley Davidson's (HOG) shareholders have benefited both from the industry recovery and positive headlines emanating from the company such as the recent announcement that it was releasing a sub-$10,000 line in the second quarter called the Street. The aim: to entice millennials with some extra money to spend instead of going all in on that General Motors (GM), Ford (F), Nissan, or Toyota (TM) loaded hybrid vehicle.
I wanted to take the opportunity to get beyond the headlines on Harley Davidson, highlighting three things that are happening that you would be hard pressed to find.
Dealer network boom is underway: It's not that the number of U.S. Harley Davidson dealers is exploding, it's that existing owners are adding significant square footage to their buildings. For example: the world's largest Harley Davidson store at 146,000 square feet is set to open in Scottsdale, Arizona in late spring 2015 after a major retrofitting. This store will join huge expansions to dealers in Fargo, North Dakota and Black Hills, South Dakota. Key attributes of these remodeled locations: 1) more space for service and parking; and (2) dedicated areas for bike nights and demo rides. Here comes the Sons of Anarchy inspired biker club boom!
No joke: Women in India are flocking to Harley Davidson, yes for real. Harley Davidson is actively promoting bikes in the country that match female lifestyles and riding preferences.
Indian motorcycle spotted: It looks like the next great bike war is well underway. After its release in the summer of 2013, Polaris' (PII) revitalized Indian line has quickly captured roughly 3% of the super heavyweight bike segment, a segment where Harley Davidson has 75% market share.
