If every person in the United States and Canada wanted to transmit a one-page e-mail simultaneously on one network, a partnership between Lucent and Time Warner Telecom ( TWTC) has made it possible, the companies say.

Lucent said Time Warner will deploy its WaveStar OLS 1.6 terabit system under a three-year contract worth up to $100 million. The agreement extends a 1998 contract between the two companies for $250 million.

WaveStar increases the capacity of communications networks and is being installed in Time Warner's western network, which includes such markets as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
