AS&E, Inc. Receives Order For Z Portal System From Taiwan Aviation Police For Comprehensive Air Cargo Inspection

BILLERICA, Mass., March 31, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Science and Engineering, Inc. ("AS&E") (Nasdaq:ASEI), a leading worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray detection solutions, announced today the receipt of an order for a Z Portal® cargo screening system from Taiwan Aviation Police. By co-locating their new Z Portal system with their existing Sentry® Portal, Taiwan Aviation Police will now have a more comprehensive air cargo screening system to better detect organic threats and other contraband in pallets and containers routed through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

"As concealment techniques grow more sophisticated, detection capabilities must become more comprehensive," said Chuck Dougherty, AS&E's President and CEO. "We're leveraging our domain expertise to advise customers on the deployment of complementary technologies to provide unparalleled screening capabilities for threats and contraband. It's this ability to deliver more comprehensive security solutions that drives expansion opportunities in Asia and other targeted markets."

Taiwan Aviation Police's Gemini® 100100 air cargo X-ray inspection system was recently instrumental in detecting 244 cartons of the anesthetic drug Ketamine, one of the largest narcotics seizures in the region in the past few years.

About AS&E's Z Portal

The Z Portal system is the most comprehensive screening system available with multi-view, drive-through screening of cars, vans, trucks, and their cargo. The Z Portal system combines multi-view imaging (left, right, and top-down) with the superior detection capabilities of AS&E's patented Z Backscatter ® technology to give comprehensive ability to detect explosives, drugs, stowaways, and other contraband while simultaneously facilitating the flow of traffic. With its compact design, the Z Portal system is ideal for high-traffic locations with space constraints and is safe for drivers, operators, cargo, and the environment. The relocatable screening system is available in two sizes — one for large trucks, buses, and cargo vehicles, and a smaller size for passenger vehicles.

About AS&E's Sentry Portal

The Sentry Portal is a high-throughput, high-penetration, drive-through screening system for quickly and safely scanning trucks and cargo while maintaining the flow of commerce. The compact system uses high-energy transmission X-rays — capable of penetrating up to 300 mm (11.8 in) of steel — to detect hidden threats and contraband in cargo containers, tankers, and large vehicles. The Sentry Portal system scans containers at a rate of up to 150 per hour and is ideal at high-throughput environments such as crowded seaports, border crossings, and security checkpoints.
