NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- RPX (Nasdaq: RPXC) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from sell to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its robust revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures and expanding profit margins. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including unimpressive growth in net income and disappointing return on equity.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • Compared to its closing price of one year ago, RPXC's share price has jumped by 27.35%, exceeding the performance of the broader market during that same time frame. Regarding the stock's future course, our hold rating indicates that we do not recommend additional investment in this stock despite its gains in the past year.
  • Despite its growing revenue, the company underperformed as compared with the industry average of 18.0%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues rose by 16.9%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share.
  • RPX CORP's earnings per share declined by 31.6% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. This company has reported somewhat volatile earnings recently. But, we feel it is poised for EPS growth in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, RPX CORP increased its bottom line by earning $0.77 versus $0.73 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($1.00 versus $0.77).
  • The company, on the basis of change in net income from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500 and the Professional Services industry. The net income has significantly decreased by 30.7% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from $10.10 million to $6.99 million.
  • The company's current return on equity has slightly decreased from the same quarter one year prior. This implies a minor weakness in the organization. When compared to other companies in the Professional Services industry and the overall market, RPX CORP's return on equity is below that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.

RPX Corporation provides patent risk management solutions in the United States, Japan, and internationally. The company offers a subscription-based patent risk management solution that facilitates exchanges of value between owners and users of patents. RPX has a market cap of $864.8 million and is part of the services sector and diversified services industry. Shares are down 2.5% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.
