Baidu Inc. (BIDU): Today's Featured Internet Winner

Baidu ( BIDU) pushed the Internet industry higher today making it today's featured internet winner. The industry as a whole closed the day up 2.3%. By the end of trading, Baidu rose $6.31 (3.8%) to $173.79 on average volume. Throughout the day, 3,722,818 shares of Baidu exchanged hands as compared to its average daily volume of 3,500,400 shares. The stock ranged in a price between $168.93-$174.30 after having opened the day at $170.00 as compared to the previous trading day's close of $167.48. Other companies within the Internet industry that increased today were: ChinaNet Online Holdings ( CNET), up 25.0%, Points International ( PCOM), up 17.6%, ChinaCache International Holdings ( CCIH), up 17.4% and Renren ( RENN), up 11.2%.

Baidu, Inc. provides Chinese language Internet search services. It also offers a Chinese language search platform for businesses to reach their customers. Baidu has a market cap of $58.6 billion and is part of the technology sector. Shares are down 5.8% year to date as of the close of trading on Friday. Currently there are 11 analysts that rate Baidu a buy, no analysts rate it a sell, and 3 rate it a hold.

TheStreet Ratings rates Baidu as a buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its robust revenue growth, solid stock price performance, growth in earnings per share, expanding profit margins and largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures. Although no company is perfect, currently we do not see any significant weaknesses which are likely to detract from the generally positive outlook.

On the negative front, LiveDeal ( LIVE), down 10.0%, Blucora ( BCOR), down 8.4%, Care.com ( CRCM), down 6.7% and MeetMe ( MEET), down 3.4%.

For investors not wanting singular stock exposure, ETFs may be of interest. Investors who are bullish on the internet industry could consider First Trust Dow Jones Internet Idx ( FDN) while those bearish on the internet industry could consider ProShares Ultra Short Technology ( REW).
