5 Valentine's Day Apps for 2014

Updated from Feb. 11 to include information about the Yahoo!-Yelp deal in the sixth paragraph.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- It's February, so that means love is in the air. Or, in the case of this year, frostbite is likely taking over -- at least in most of the U.S.

Valentine's Day is Friday, Feb. 14 and tech giant, Apple (AAPL), has curated apps to help make everyone's holiday more enjoyable -- whether you're single, dating someone, or in a long-term relationship.

Apple's App Store has a section dedicated on the front page for all the games, kid-centric apps, gift-finding apps and weekend getaways you'll need if you're looking to celebrate Valentine's weekend with that special someone. With so many apps to choose from, it's hard to pick favorites, but here are five iPhone apps to help make Valentine's Day your most romantic holiday yet.

Yelp

Yelp
(YELP), the popular San Francisco-based reviews company, is the perfect app to download if you're looking for that romantic dinner for two.

During the fourth-quarter, Yelp noted cumulative reviews climbed 47% year over year to 53 million, and average monthly unique visitors surged 39% during the same time frame to about 120 million.

Not only is Yelp popular for Valentine's Day ideas, it's in a romantic engagement of its own. Reports suggest Yahoo! (YHOO) is going to include Yelp reviews in its search results, for local search.

The app, which is free to download for iOS as well as Google's (GOOG) Android, not only has restaurant recommendations, but reviews of local businesses. If you're looking for a florist or a candy shop for to buy a gift for your special someone, Yelp has it. It even has places close by to you so if you're not eating out, you find a romantic spot to just get away from it all, and spend some time with each other.

The Yelp iOS app requires iOS 6.0 or later, is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is also optimized for iPhone 5. The app was last updated on Jan. 30, 2014.

A Love Pic Booth for Instagram

There's nothing more romantic than taking a picture of you and your significant other, especially if it's in a romantic setting, say the shore, a still pond or a garden.

Instagram, owned by Facebook (FB), has become one of the world's most popular photo sharing apps, with 150 million monthly active users (MAUs), 55 million photos per day and over 16 billion photos shared.

To make Instagram even better, especially for Valentine's Day, here is an app that turns your camera into a photo booth: A Love Pic Booth Cam.

This app allows you to take photos, add frames and cut into the background of the image to add a romantic or poetic background, altering the photo to make it even more romantic. Not only does the app have ways to manipulate the background, you can also add a love poem or a message to the photo, using the built-in recorder.

This iOS app requires users to have iOS 4.3 or later, and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The app is optimized for iPhone 5, and was last updated on July 22, 2013.

OkCupid

If you're single this Valentine's Day, fear not: you're not alone.

While those in love celebrate Valentine's Day with fervor, there are those who scorn the day over fears they will never find love. Luckily, there's an app for that: OkCupid.

OkCupid, like many dating-centric apps, allows you to search for singles in your area. Though the app itself is free, OkCupid has several packages for those looking for love, with a one-month package starting at $9.99, three months for $23.99, all the way up to 12 months, which starts at $39.99.

With the OkCupid app, you can meet and chat with others on the site, browse people's profiles, get special match options, see who has read your messages, and use the company's matching algorithm to help find that special someone.

Making this app even more appealing for those feeling a little bummed is that payment is easy. It's already set up via your iTunes Account, and when the period ends if you haven't found someone by then, it automatically renews. Of course, you can turn off auto-renewal by changing your iTunes Account settings.

OkCupid requires iDevice users to have iOS 6.1 or later, and is optimized for iPhone 5. It was last updated on Oct. 31, 2013.

1-800-Flowers

1-800-FLOWERS.COM (FLWS) is your go-to place for ordering flowers, whether it's a new relationship, a marriage that's lasted 50 years or anything in between.

The app, which is free from the App Store, allows users to shop anywhere or anytime, from a variety of brands, including 1800flowers.com, Fruitbouquets.com, 1800baskets.com, The Popcorn Factory, Fannie May Confections and Harry London gourmet chocolates and Stock Yards fine steaks.

Using the app will get you exclusive offers, access to the full selection of flowers and gifts, and the ability to checkout in a secure fashion.

The app requires users to have iOS 4.3 or later, and is optimized for iPhone 5. The last update which was done on Feb. 1, 2014 was done to improve performance, stability and browsing, the company says.

Valentine's Day Recipes

If you're going to be spending Valentine's Day with a loved one, it can get pretty pricy, buying flowers, jewelry and going out to dinner. Why not make a meal at home for the two of you, which can be equally romantic, if not more so?

There's an app on the App Store, Valentine's Day Recipes, that gives you 140 different recipes to make a meal fit for a king, a queen, or both. With the app, you can bookmark favorite recipes so you can come back later, all in an aesthetically pleasing layout.

The app required iOS 4.3 or later, and was last updated on Feb. 2011.
