NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Ligand Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: LGND) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from hold to buy. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its compelling growth in net income, revenue growth, largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, notable return on equity and expanding profit margins. Although no company is perfect, currently we do not see any significant weaknesses which are likely to detract from the generally positive outlook.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Biotechnology industry. The net income increased by 75.9% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, rising from $1.06 million to $1.87 million.
  • Despite its growing revenue, the company underperformed as compared with the industry average of 15.5%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 8.1%. This growth in revenue does not appear to have trickled down to the company's bottom line, displayed by a decline in earnings per share.
  • LGND's debt-to-equity ratio is very low at 0.18 and is currently below that of the industry average, implying that there has been very successful management of debt levels.
  • The company's current return on equity greatly increased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of significant strength within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Biotechnology industry and the overall market, LIGAND PHARMACEUTICAL INC's return on equity exceeds that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
  • 44.96% is the gross profit margin for LIGAND PHARMACEUTICAL INC which we consider to be strong. It has increased from the same quarter the previous year. Regardless of the strong results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of 12.68% trails the industry average.

Ligand has a market cap of $1.46 billion and is part of the health care sector and drugs industry. Shares are up 41.5% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.
