Maybe I'm not alone in my criticism of how Facebook (FB) curates user news feeds these days. I expressed a sentiment similar to that of TheStreet contributor Jason Notte in the recent Facebook Loses When It Tries To Be Twitter.
Seems to me Facebook continues to fail as it attempts to step on Twitter's (TWTR) turf as the modern day newspaper.
My news feed is a constant stream of stories from TheStreet, BuzzFeed, Gawker and Business Insider. As a result, it's really come to a point where I find less and less reason to go to Facebook. I can get everything Facebook's news feed offers at Twitter, but in proper, more relevant quantities and with the ability to nicely tailor what I see thanks to Twitter's intuitive platform.
At this point, it's difficult to determine how to take control of your Facebook news feed. I don't want to "unlike" my own employer or the other fine aforementioned publications. And I don't want to unlike actual friends who post the BuzzFeed "Here's what city you should live in" quiz for the umpteenth time.
Facebook is doing a horrible job making those decisions on your behalf or prompting you to make them for yourself. Simply put, it's a mess as Facebook works backwards to be like Twitter.
While it's hardly hurting the business now, it doesn't bode well for the future, making me feel confident about thoughts I expressed in Summer 2012 in Why Twitter Will Live And Facebook Will Die.
