NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- In response to last week's Marissa Mayer's Awesome Content Strategy Fuels Yahoo! Optimism, several readers emailed and Tweeted with the same concern:
Yahoo! (YHOO) Mail sucks!To a certain extent, I agree. The desktop version of Yahoo! Mail is, while getting better (probably because I'm just getting used to its various quirks) does stink. No doubt. In the spirit of what Yahoo! did to its Sports properties, the Yahoo! Mail overhaul feels a lot like change for the sake of change. But, you can -- and I did -- say the same about the cosmetic changes to Apple's ( AAPL) mobile operating system. Speaking of Apple, why does Tim Cook, or Steve Jobs for that matter, get a pass for less-than-stellar software and services performance, yet we're supposed to rant over Mayer and her team's subpar job with Yahoo! Mail? First, it's clear that Mayer favors mobile over desktop at Yahoo! The mobile version of Yahoo! Mail is excellent. It's superior to the desktop by miles. I'm not sure it's a good strategy to focus so much on mobile that the desktop experience suffers, but, for better or worse, this appears to be an industry trend. Second, if we're going to talk about glitches, bugs and overall poor quality experiences, let's talk about Apple Mail on the desktop and iMessage on iOS 7. Since the updates to the respective operating systems, neither one has ever performed worse. I have read two things from multiple sources: Apple says any issues are impacting a small group of users and the company expects to release fixes in the not-so-distant future. Here's hoping the latter holds true, but, as for the former, just about everybody I have run into in my personal life, work and on Twitter reports the same or similar issues as I'm having on both platforms. Apple Mail simply doesn't want to give me my email, as it comes in, from my TheStreet account. And iMessage works sporadically as best. I have reset the network, placed my finger to my nose with my right foot in the air and still, many iMessages I attempt to send get about 85% of the way there (based on the blue status bar) and just hang in the ether. Sometimes they go through. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they end up getting sent as text messages. And don't even get me started on the fact that, after a recent and almost completely pain-free upgrade to the most-excellent Mavericks OS X, I, along with quite a few others, absolutely cannot update Apple's iPhoto application, rendering it un-openable and unusable. These are all first-world problems, I know, but the least of your concerns as a user of technology and/or an investor in stocks should be the free Web-based version of a dime-a-dozen mail interface.
