Lieutenant Craig Williams, Houston Police Department, Houston, Texas

In the Houston area, there are approximately 20,000 gang members belonging to more than 300 gangs documented by gang enforcement agencies. With criminal gang activity no longer limited to the inner city, we needed a proactive solution to unify law enforcement and involve the community in the critical fight against criminal gang activity. Since adoption of the website, we have enlisted community support by offering a safe, anonymous way for citizens to provide gang crime tips, resulting in 35 arrests this year alone.”

Lieutenant Steve Addison, Denver Police Department, Denver, Colorado

“We encourage our officers to take a team approach to collaborative problem solving along with partnering with the community through their interaction with clients. The goals of the project were to improve client outcomes through officer/client relationships, improve citizen’s perceptions of officers and enhance police and community relations. We have seen great positive outcome within our community by improving communication, which in return reduces recidivism and substance abuse.”

Constable Alana Savage, Edmonton Police Service, Alberta, Canada

“The Domestic Violence Reduction Strategy Program was created after the EPS recorded an increasing number of domestic violence-related assaults, and many of these were categorized as high risk. Due to resource and workload issues, many files never received attention from the Domestic Violence Intervention Team (DVIT) for follow-up investigation, victim-based intervention or advocacy. The Southeast Division was determined to bridge the gap in service and today this initiative has been implemented throughout the other EPS patrol divisions.”
