NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Skullcandy (Nasdaq: SKUL) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from sell to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its largely solid financial position with reasonable debt levels by most measures, reasonable valuation levels and good cash flow from operations. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including deteriorating net income, disappointing return on equity and a generally disappointing performance in the stock itself.

Highlights from the ratings report include:
  • SKUL has no debt to speak of therefore resulting in a debt-to-equity ratio of zero, which we consider to be a relatively favorable sign. To add to this, SKUL has a quick ratio of 2.49, which demonstrates the ability of the company to cover short-term liquidity needs.
  • 49.23% is the gross profit margin for SKULLCANDY INC which we consider to be strong. Regardless of SKUL's high profit margin, it has managed to decrease from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of -1.25% trails the industry average.
  • The company, on the basis of change in net income from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500 and the Household Durables industry. The net income has significantly decreased by 109.3% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from $6.81 million to -$0.64 million.
  • Return on equity has greatly decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness within the corporation. When compared to other companies in the Household Durables industry and the overall market, SKULLCANDY INC's return on equity is below that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.

Skullcandy Inc. designs, markets, and distributes performance audio and gaming headphones, and other accessory related products under the Skullcandy, Astro Gaming, and 2XL by Skullcandy brands in the United States and internationally. Skullcandy has a market cap of $179.4 million and is part of the consumer goods sector and consumer durables industry. Shares are down 17.1% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.
